jensend writes "The 1.7 branch of Cygwin, the Unix-like environment for Windows, has reached stable status after about 3 1/2 years of effort. Among many other changes, this release drops support for Windows 9x. Since the NT API and NT-based versions of Windows are more capable and somewhat less of a mismatch with POSIX (for instance, they include a security model), this has allowed for code path simplifications, better performance (particularly noticeable with pipe I/O), better security, and better POSIX compatibility."pa href="http://developers.slashdot.org/story/09/12/24/228237/Cygwin-17-Released?from=rss"img src="http://developers.slashdot.org/slashdot-it.pl?from=rssamp;op=imageamp;style=h0amp;sid=09/12/24/228237"/a/ppa href="http://developers.slashdot.org/story/09/12/24/228237/Cygwin-17-Released?from=rss"Read more of this story/a at Slashdot./p pa href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/KF94o7I1N7UdQ6B8uFzyxt7Pvck/0/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/KF94o7I1N7UdQ6B8uFzyxt7Pvck/0/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/abr/ a href="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/KF94o7I1N7UdQ6B8uFzyxt7Pvck/1/da"img src="http://feedads.g.doubleclick.net/~at/KF94o7I1N7UdQ6B8uFzyxt7Pvck/1/di" border="0" ismap="true"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Slashdot/slashdotDevelopers/~4/T1wJ1UT8B7E" height="1" width="1"/
